In lieu of the recently delayed beta, Star Citizen creator and Cloud Imperium Games CEO Chris Roberts, dropped some fascinating details about the world in which Star Citizen takes place. “I realize the delay is disappointing to some,” Roberts said in a statement “so I wanted to whet your appetite with a little lore about the universe in which Star Citizen, Squadron 42, and Arena Commander all take place.”

“It has always been important to us that the world feels real, even though your are flying futuristic space ships and going pew-pew with your lasers. This is one reason why we chose to hire real world actors and actresses like Mark Hamil, Gary Oldman, and Gillian Anderson to star in the Squadron 42 campaign. Seeing them on your screen immediately reminds you how dated this game will be when it finally comes out. Most of these actors will probably be dead in real life, so they would most certainly be dead in the far far future of Star Citizen. It’s all about connecting today with the future of tomorrow.”

Chris rambled on for some time about how he created Freelancer, neglecting to mention how that game was okay at the time, but failed to meet expectations. He then finished up with a final tidbit of lore:

“The final thing I want to add,” Roberts concluded “is that even in the year Star Citizen takes place, Star Citizen hasn’t been released yet. You can use your space credits to support the developers by accessing https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge from your star ship’s computer and donate from anywhere in the galaxy! I think this is a great little bit of story building that many will get a kick out of!”

Chris then put on a space helmet made out of a Bud Light box and duct tape, sat on the ground, and yelled “ALL SYSTEMS GO! Whoooosh!!” as four men picked him up and flew him around the parking lot.

I remember playing Super Mario Bros. and Metroid on the NES with my older brother, and never being able to land on the aircraft carrier in Top Gun. I faked being sick so I could stay home from school and play Quake II once, but now I request days off from work instead of lying. Age of Empires II is still the best RTS, Half-Life is still the best FPS, and I still think the end of Mass Effect 3 was great!
