Playtonic Games has announced the release date for their highly anticipated 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee. You’ll be able to join up with the titular duo on April 11th for $39.99. It will launch simultaneously on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Mac, and Linux. The previously announced Wii U version has unfortunately been cancelled in favor of a Nintendo Switch version, that version does not have a release date. On their blog, Playtonic Games said they are offering refunds to those who specifically backed the Wii U version. They are also allowing them to change their order to another platform if they choose to do so

Pre-ordering the game on PC, PS4, or Xbox One will get you access to the Yooka-Laylee Toybox. The Toybox is a spoiler-free taste of the platforming mechanics that will be in the final game. Additionally, pre-ordering on Steam or GOG.com will get you access to digital versions of an art book/manual and game soundtrack.

New Trailer

In conjunction with today’s announcement, Playtonic Games also put out a new trailer showcasing a new casino themed level called Capital Cashino, trailer embedded below.

Humble Beginnings

Announced in May 2015 on Kickstarter, Yooka-Laylee pitched itself as a throwback to the early days of 3D platforming. Drawing inspiration specifically from Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie, and favoring puzzles over combat. Playtonic Games pooled many former Rare employees to create a team dedicated to recapturing the look and feel of those classic games. They even brought in Grant Kirkhope to compose the soundtrack, which you can hear a sample of below. At the time, it was the fastest Kickstarter to reach $1 million.

 My Take

I recently played through the previously mentioned Toybox and found it to be a welcome dose of nostalgia, while also feeling like a fresh take on an old formula. The bouncy music, vibrant colors, and quirky characters are very reminiscent of the original Banjo-Kazooie games. However, the gameplay mechanics are much tighter and more responsive, making for a more enjoyable gameplay experience. It gave me high hopes that Yooka-Laylee will not only recapture the magic of playing the old games it draws so much inspiration from, but also provide a fresh take on an old genre.

Ryan Shepard

I remember playing Super Mario Bros. and Metroid on the NES with my older brother, and never being able to land on the aircraft carrier in Top Gun. I faked being sick so I could stay home from school and play Quake II once, but now I request days off from work instead of lying. Age of Empires II is still the best RTS, Half-Life is still the best FPS, and I still think the end of Mass Effect 3 was great!
