Team17’s colorful, terrifying Planet Alpha is set to hit store shelves on September 4th. Under development by Planet Alpha Game Studio, Planet Alpha sees you stranded on a strange alien world full of danger and mystery. You must solve puzzles and avoid untimely death by taking advantage of your abilities as well as the environment. Planet Alpha may seem like a bright, colorful platformer, but there’s a lot more going on under the surface.

I was fortunate enough to get some hands on time with an early version of Planet Alpha and PAX East 2018. The demo allowed me to see just how much the game borrows from games like LIMBO and INSIDE, while also carving it’s own path. Expect a lot of trial and error while you hide in the bushes from giant man-killing bees then quickly make that harrowing, last minute leap of faith as the ground crumbles beneath your feet. You also have the ability to manipulate the time of day, which causes certain plants and animals to behave differently.

What really sets Planet Alpha apart from it’s contemporaries is it’s use of color and breathtaking vistas. The living, wild planet serves as the backdrop to your adventure, as well as a preview of what to expect next. The planet itself is just as much a character as you are, and just as unpredictable as the mysteries it holds.

Planet Alpha is set to launch on September 4th on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Switch. For more info you can check out the trailer below and stay tuned to Voxel Voice as the release date draws near.

I remember playing Super Mario Bros. and Metroid on the NES with my older brother, and never being able to land on the aircraft carrier in Top Gun. I faked being sick so I could stay home from school and play Quake II once, but now I request days off from work instead of lying. Age of Empires II is still the best RTS, Half-Life is still the best FPS, and I still think the end of Mass Effect 3 was great!
