Obsidian Entertainment, best know for their cRPG series Pillars of Eternity and of course Fallout: New Vegas (secretly the best Fallout), had teased that they were going to announce something at The Game Awards. Rumors circulated, but none of them quite nailed exactly what The Outer Worlds is. The trailer and details are little light, but the vibe and inspiration is clear. This appears to be a Fallout-style RPG in space. When I say “Fallout-stye” I don’t mean a throwback to the old-school tactics games, I mean a first person RPG with guns, monsters, and attitude.

It starts with your character crash landing on an alien planet and having to choose between helping one of the two conflicting factions. There’s space corporations, space pirates, space bandits, and space monsters, and they all need to be killed with your space shotgun. Of course, there’s more here than meets the eye. It’s very much being touted as “from the original creators of Fallout“, so you know there is going to be some smart, witty, satirical writing around the game’s sci-fi setting and the politics of said setting.

But that’s all we have right now. The game is slated to launch sometime in 2019 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. You can check out the trailer below for more info and stay tuned to Voxel Voice for more on The Outer Worlds.

I remember playing Super Mario Bros. and Metroid on the NES with my older brother, and never being able to land on the aircraft carrier in Top Gun. I faked being sick so I could stay home from school and play Quake II once, but now I request days off from work instead of lying. Age of Empires II is still the best RTS, Half-Life is still the best FPS, and I still think the end of Mass Effect 3 was great!
