One of the bigger surprises at The Game Awards was the announcement and early access launch of Hades, a new game by Supergiant Games. It’s in keeping with Supergiant’s pedigree of isometric action games with incredibly vibrant, stylized art. It also appears to be more in the vein of Bastion or Transistor than their latest Pyre, showcasing combat and a story focused on a central protagonist.

Hades seems to feature the studio’s signatures of great voice acting and narration, combined with a distinct visual style. There’s also something going on with death, as well. The trailer shows you awakening amongst the spirits of your previously failed attempts whenever you fall in combat. It doesn’t look like a huge departure for the studio, but considering their reputation, it doesn’t really need to be.

One of the more interesting parts of the announcement is that the game is available to play right now in early access on the newly launched Epic Games Store. Epic recently announced their move to offer non-Epic developed games on their store front, and in the process giving developers a better deal on the profit split. Hades was one of several games announced at The Game Awards that are being released on the service. You can buy and play the early access version of Hades right now for $20.

I remember playing Super Mario Bros. and Metroid on the NES with my older brother, and never being able to land on the aircraft carrier in Top Gun. I faked being sick so I could stay home from school and play Quake II once, but now I request days off from work instead of lying. Age of Empires II is still the best RTS, Half-Life is still the best FPS, and I still think the end of Mass Effect 3 was great!
